Typography & Subversion: Screen Printing in the Alleyways

Published by Design Lab Tokyo on October 18, 2024 • Updated October 18, 2024

Custom graphics screen printed on alternative street garments

Graphic lettering on street clothing was once simple branding. Today, alternative fashion utilizes aggressive, heavily textured typography as a medium of pure subversion.

At JPLOOF, we explore prints that undergo multiple levels of erosion. Hand-pulled screen printing on raw cotton results in slight irregularities, making each print unique. Combined with heavy wash treatments, the letters split and wear alongside the textile itself, forming a dynamic landscape of aging ink.

Why Contrast Matters

In Shinjuku's high-density visual landscape, subtlety often gets lost. High-contrast typography works like concrete posters, bringing raw underground graphic design directly into public spaces. It's the ultimate combination of independent art and utilitarian streetwear.
